Benefits of Composting

compostingStarting a compost pile at home may sound intimidating. In reality, starting a compost pile is not only easy; it’s beneficial to you and the environment.

Still not convinced? Here are a few big benefits of composting:

• Compost is compatible with organic gardening. This is especially important if are growing crops for food, or if you have children or pets that play near your garden.

• Composting can lower your trash bill. By using your compost pile for food scraps, paper and yard waste, you may be able to reduce your garbage pickup fee.

• Compost reduces gardening costs. Compost has been found to reduce the need for fertilizer, reduce pest activity and yield more crops. No need to spend money on expensive soil amendment products and fertilizers.

• Compost is environmentally friendly. Less trash at the curb means less trash in our landfills and a smaller environmental footprint.

• Compost is in high demand. Organic gardeners, city dwellers and nurseries all purchase compost. If you have the space and a little time, your compost pile could actually make you money.

• Compost reduces animal waste run off. Even a small farm can produce significant amounts of animal waste. If not properly disposed of, animal waste can contaminate ground water and breed toxic bacteria. However, animal bedding and waste is like gold for the compost pile. Why not put all that waste to work?

Compost ingredients include food waste, paper products, animal waste and yard clippings. These ingredients take time to decompose. Airflow and water can help speed up the process. Specially designed compost bins can keep animals out and help move things along, but all you really need is a place to put your scraps and a few minutes each week to give them a good splash and stir.

If your living situation is not compatible with composting at home, check with your local waste management company to see if they offer compost pickup. Although you won’t be able to reuse your own compost, you will be able to contribute to a healthier planet.
